Lt. Shambarger survived the crash while jumping out of the bomber with his parachute. Shortly after his landing he was killed by a Dutch NSBer who stabbed him with his bayonet. The Germans spread the story that Lt. Shambarger had impailed himself on a fence post during landing. To one of the captured crew members was told that Lt. Shambargers parachute didn’t open.

I didn't see his body." Per Lt Faulk: "At least 6 Czech civilians said that he was wounded by shots in his descent from Hungarian soldiers of German Army and was shot to death the next day and his body was in Kováčová, Slovakia."

On 22 March 1945 the aircraft was hit by jet fighters, ME 109´s and ME 210´s, just after bombs away. Most of the damage centered from the radio room to the tail. Richard didn´t bail out. He assisted the pilot in a crash landing. A crewmember saw how he got shot in the back by Germans while running towards the Russians. They brought him to a field hospital where he died of his wounds. S/Sgt John Andreola saw him two days later in this field hospital. He had just died 12 hours previously. The Russians attended to the burial.
